What You'll Need

Here you can find the complete list of what you'll need for this class, and some further details about the projects you'll be making!

The Projects

The Double Weave Rug - The rug I'll be weaving in this class will measure approximately 30" x 23" or 76cm x 58cm - not including the fringe. It will be woven with two contrasting colours - green and pink.

The Double Weave Cushion - The cushion I'll be weaving in this class will measure approximately 19" x 19" or 48cm x 48cm. It will be woven with three complementary colours - ochre, green and brown.

The Double Weave Curtain - The curtain panel I'll be weaving in this class will measure approximately 26" x 56" or 66cm x 142cm. It will be woven with two complementary colours - pale blue and sage green.

Detailed patterns with exact dimensions will be included in each class.

The Loom

To weave all the projects in this series, I'll be using a simple upright frame loom. Instructions for how to make your own loom are included in the next section - click here to find out more.

If you already have an upright loom at home, you can easily adapt it to make this rug. Just make sure it is large enough to fit a warp that is 26" or 66cm wide.

You can also easily make this rug on a rigid heddle loom, or on a 4-shaft table or floor loom. I've included digital guides alongside the videos to help you tweak the instructions to suit your loom. Again, just make sure your loom is large enough to fit a warp that is 26" or 66cm wide, and click here to view the additional equipment and materials you'll need to adapt your loom for this class.

Warp & Weft

All of the projects in this series will woven from Axminster rug wool, with the same yarn used for the warp and the weft. The yarn weights I'll be using are listed below.

The Double Weave Rug - For this rug I'll be using Axminster rug wool that is 15 WPI thick - equivalent to a 4ply or sport weight yarn. It is roughly 1250 metres per kilo, or 621 yards per pound. In total I used approximately 510g or 18oz of it for this project - around 150g/5oz of pink yarn and 350g/12oz of green yarn.

The Double Weave Cushion - For the cushion I'll be using Axminster rug wool that is 14 WPI thick - equivalent to a 4ply or sport weight yarn . It is roughly 1250 metres per kilo, or 621 yards per pound. In total I used approximately 600g or 21oz of it for this project - around 200g/7oz of each colour of yarn.

The Double Weave Curtain - For the curtain I'll be using two weights of Axminster rug wool - a pale blue that is 10 WPI (equivalent to a DK weight) and a sage green that is 15 WPI (equivalent to a 4ply or sport weight) The 10 WPI yarn is roughly 1000 metres per kilo or 496 yards per pound. The 15 WPI yarn is roughly 1250 metres per kilo, or 621 yards per pound. In total I used around 550g for this project, 500g of the 10 WPI blue and 50g of the 15 WPI sage green.

Weaving Tools

I will be using the following tools to weave each project - stick shuttles, a bobbin and a comb. You will need at least two shuttles - one for each colour - and these will carry the weft through the warp while weaving. The bobbin will be used to position and adjust the warp and weft, especially at the selvedges. Finally the comb or beater will be used to pack down the weft over the warp.

Essential Tools

The other essential tools and materials I will use in the class are as follows -

  • A pencil and ruler for marking the warp spacing

  • A pair of sharp sewing scissors or fabric shears for cutting and trimming

  • A long length of cotton twine for the heddle string and base twining (I recommend at least 14 yards / 12 metres)

  • A tapestry needle for stitching in loose ends

  • A sewing needle and white/colour-matched thread for sewing the hems of the cushion and curtain.

Optional Tools

Non-essential tools that I will use in the class are -

  • A yarn ball winder to wind your yarn into cakes. This speeds up the process of winding on the warp and winding the shuttles, as you can wind two strands at a time from each cake.

  • A rotary fabric cutter and cutting mat for trimming the fringe of the rug (this can also be done with a pair of sharp fabric shears)

  • Three large towels and an iron for steam pressing each project at the very last step
